Back in Santa Fe: Tecolote Cafe

IMG01665 I’ve been known to seek out places featured on “Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives,” so it’s only natural that I’ve been dying to go to Tecolote Cafe since Guy’s visit!

Any place whose slogan is “Great Breakfast, No Toast” earns a gold star in my book even before I visit. The food? Outta this world! I had the Huevos Yucatecos, which is a corn tortilla topped with beans, eggs, cheese, pico de gallo, and green chile, accompanied by posole and cooked bananas. This dish only earned one chile (out of two) in heat, but it was so spicy that under my eyes were sweating. It really was the best green chile I’ve had in Santa Fe, but I’m not sure I could take the dishes that earn two peppers. The bakery basket that accompanied the meal was the best part- fresh berry muffins and cornbread filled with peppers. Tecolote is sensitive to dieter’s restrictions- you can get meat or egg substitutes, they have a “low cholesterol” section on the menu, and some foods and the chile sauces are prepared with little salt. The breakfast at Tecolote Cafe is so good you won’t even miss the toast.
